One of the biggest challenges online publishers have faced is their increased exposure to the end user. Before publishers rarely worked directly with the end users of their products, most of the time working through a third party mediator, and therefore they did not have the proper tools to work well with them. Developing and adopting those tools in this digital age has been a hardship, but there is a ray of hope at the end of the tunnel. The company Publishing Technology is facing the challenge of the end user head-on with the release of their new Ingentaconnect features.
On September 23rd of this year Publishing Technology, the world’s leading provider of content services to the publishing industry announced the adoption of a new interface for the Ingentaconnect platform, which is the world’s largest resource for scholarly publishing, hosting just below 5 million articles. This new interface will be more user friendly, have a better design, the information will be easier to find, and the overall site easier to navigate. There will be a twitter account connected to the new homepage which will give minute-by-minute updates. Also, the new homepage will highlight all new as well as most viewed articles.
The most exciting development though is the addition of Connect Compilations which will allow publishers to bring together and repackage already published content. This means that material involving a subject can be pulled from all different mediums and accessed as a whole. This new software makes it easier to tailor information for specific audiences, which has been a major end user hurdle for a while.
They also mention that over the next six months they will be improving other site features, along with the adding on six new publishers and their materials to the site.
This new interface is a very exciting development in the area of improved end user use. It will be interesting to see how this new interface performs and what it will inspire other companies to create. It will also be interesting to see how libraries will react to this change, since libraries are a part of the audience that the company is aiming for.
