I've often heard book publishing companies state that "digital changes everything."
I tend to agree. With the many facets of how we now access information nowadays, the digital world of media is only changing in a sense that it will only become more reliable and accessible. Because of this, the relationship between authors, publishers, retailer and agents are becoming complicated.
One common problem with the digital age is the distribution of library copies. Instead of going to the library and checking out a hardcover book, one can easily download a text online. And due to the fact that not many people go to libraries anymore (although some obviously do), it's apparent that we've come to a standstill with declining book sales.
Libraries are non-for-profit institutions, and in my opinion should develop a new strategy for reaching their readers on an electronic level. E-book lending is an option that should be considered essential. Libraries need the same type of control/ownership of the book one lends out as they do with e-books. The main goal here is to promote literacy for all ages. How can we do this in the library, and adapt to e-publishing changes in the industry?
